Buying second hand gas appliances?

Not sure this is the best board to post this on so please re-direct me if you think there would be more knowledge elsewhere.

Having decided not to get our swanky new kitchen with gas on glass hob and eye level oven, I am now after a range for as little money as possible as it may only be a stop gap. Builder reckons you shouldn't touch second hand gas appliances and recommends buying a new Leisure range cooker then selling on. I would prefer to buy a lovely range second hand just in case we do stick with it as our permanent solution. Anyone have any views on second hand dual fuel ranges? Is there a safety risk? Which brands would you go for?

I can't really see what the risk would be, as long as it's fitted by a gas-safe registered person. We're thinking of buying a second-hand gas oven too, possibly as a stop-gap and possibly to use for years.

it is probably worth looking for one who does lots of cookers, most gas engineers do only boilers and the occasional fire. The manufacturers might have a list of approved local repairers.

A gas cooker is a very simple appliance, but it ought to be checked for flame-failure devices, ignition and mixture.

It is also suppose to be chained to a ring in the wall to prevent it falling over if someone swings on the oven door or stands on it to change a lightbulb.

I hear there is a good trade in buying second hand ranges, giving them a clean and a respray, and selling as reconditioned.
