How embarrassing, on a scale of 1-10, is shiny paint?

Because I just painted my bathroom with a leftover can of paint. Beautiful greigey colour, but it's special bathroom paint and has a definite sheen on it.

I know matt paint is the dog's hobnobs at the moment, but will the locals actually suck their teeth when they spot my shiny walls? Or will they think, 'crappy ventilation in here - small children - time for chalky hooha in the next life'?

Incidentally, I did my other bathroom with a can of paint a friend gave me. I didn't even lift the lid or check the colour. As luck would have it, it is the most beautiful heather grey I've ever seen (Dulux Mercury, I think). Now I want to paint my entire house with it

IMO sheen is fine, shine is not :)

I am planning on painting my entire house in shiny paint, so I can wipe it. This matt emulsion is shit and uncleanable. I have a dog and two DS's

I'm repainting from matt to sheen too. Wish I'd never gone near the matt, tbh -I have 2 dcs under 5 and 4 large dogs.

What Chickens said. Greasy fingermarks up the stair walls and all round the lightswitches, impossible to get off

I have kids and a north facing living room, its silk paint. Grey Matt is nice in a light bedroom.

Yep I go for the shiny stuff everytime now when redecorating. Children are MESSY.

For Matt paint fans, try Dulux Diamond Matt. You have to get it mixed up. It is scrubable and wipe able. Have it all over the house and finger marks just wipe off.

Sheen is coming back so you are ahead of the game . All my interiors mates are ditching the chalky for what they call gleam

Well there seem to be a lot more people requesting colour and the whites/greys are fading out although I saw a big dining room in a soft sheeny pure white and it was so beautiful and very 'new' looking. Much less beigeiness and a fair bit of yellow and blue and dark walls also!

Shiny/sheeny paint is fine in bathrooms and kitchens.

When we bought this house it had a vile swirly artex ceiling in the living room which was painted in shiny paint. Seriously, it looked like an upside-down meringue. Not good, and won't be coming back into fashion any time soon.

That sounds nice. I had the living room painted a few months ago, the decorator was despirate to do Matt, he gave in to silk he wasn't happy.

The nice was to Noddy, not to artex. What shades of yellow and blue?

I wonder if the New Sheen in paints () is a spin-off from the trend for white gloss kitchens...?

Loving the idea that my gleamy walls mark me out as a trendsetter.

Less loving the news that my greige is last year's news.

I've just taken another look at the paintpots and realise why it is slightly, um, gleamier than I'd expected. There was a smaller can of gloss paint in a very similar colour (that I used to paint kitchen units). He must have mixed it in to eke the paint out further. Hence slightly more gleam than I had counted on.

Shiny blue and yellow? Really? Do my chalky F&B walls now look as stylish as Laura Ashley pinafore dresses?

Mercury shower grey looks nice. Think I'm going to get some for my dining room.

We need to know what shade of yellow and blue though, then we can be real trendsetters. Only problem now is what room to decorate shiney white?
