I need to replace 2 storage heaters - anyone with experience?

Hi,

My flat has 2 storage heaters. The bedroom one has never worked in 5 years, I just put up with it and use an electric. But the living room one broke this winter and that WILL need replacing. I think I ought to do both of them.

Was wondering if anyone has been thro this process and could give me a few tips?

Many thanks.

I don't understand the problem. Ask around for a well-recommebded local electrician, ask him which Competent Persons scheme he is a member of and check him on their website, ask fio a price. You can look at the price and range of storage heaters on some electrical wholesalers websites to see what is generally available. Dimplex are a good brand but there are cheaper.

Also ask your electricity supplier.

Unless you have money to burn avoid specialist sellers who claim they have a new invention that generates more heat from less electricity, especially if they claim it is done using magic or Italian aluminium.

P.s.

When storage heaters stop working it is most often because the overheat sensor has tripped or melted due to somebody draping wet washing on them. The recommended local electrician can usually reset or replace it for a modest charge.

depending when you are in your flat it can be sometimes cheaper to replace them with panel heater - eg if you are mainly around in the evenings - you don't get the cheap night time electricity but you do get heating when you want it -
but I agree try and see if they can be fixed first

some example here seem to be a few £hundred each trade plus fitting. They may be smaller than your old ones.

Thanks so much. I will take that advice and get stuck in. I reckon I have enough money to do both so this year might be a bit warmer (and cheaper) than previous years!

Cheers
