Paint colour to go with terracotta floor tiles?

Help! We have terracotta floor tiles a bit like this:

through our hall, dining room and kitchen.

We are going to have white kitchen units (IKEA Ramsjo white) and a light oak worktop (fake).

Originally we were all set to go for a F&B India Yellow, as advised by the woman in the shop, but DH hates it.

Any suggestions? We currently have a teal colour which is nice but a bit overpowering. The room is north-west facing and quite small.

Actually that breakfast room green is pretty much what we have now (although ours is a bit bluer). Maybe the previous owners had good taste!

have old quarry tiles in our kitchen and have recently painted the walls f&b light blue, so bluey grey really. I do think it's classy! Green-blue would be another nice option.

We have terracotta tiles. I hate them. Whatever way you look at it, you've still got an orange floor.

I painted my kitchen walls in Homebase Kitchen & Bathroom in Putty, which is a cool greige colour. It kind of takes the heat out of the orange a bit, and contrasts really nicely with white. I like it so much I've just used it in my bathroom too

I like the colour in that fourth picture down that you posted - you can see it goes well with a similar floor colouring. Would keep it all a little more neutral than green.

Am off to choose the colour later, kitchen is being done next week so I need to get a move on.

Thanks for the comments, they are useful. I am now thinking neutral or kind of stone coloured (having told the woman in the shop that we like strong colours!) but I think 2 strong colours in one room will be too much.

Why not plain white? I like the picture you posted earlier of the white walls and reddish fabrics.

Too much white in a NW facing room could be cold and the white of the walls may not match the white of the units exactly. one will look dirty

That's what I'm worried about 7to25. The units and the shelves will already be white, I think it will be tough to match and also a bit cold. Our hall is white and looks nice but there is wood in there too.

Am going to the paintshop now, will report back!

I think the woman is sick of me in the paint shop... She said no to green and grey.

Anyway, I've come home with "Little Greene" "Stone - Dark -Warm".

The first coat on a bit of wood is looking promising. It's not the sort of colour you pick off the chart as "nice" but am hoping it will tone with the orange floor and make the white cabinets look nice.

The man is coming next week to do the kitchen so I need to decide this weekend, am hoping this is the one.

I think it's kind of putty coloured, like Devora chose.

Actually having looked online I think your putty is much lighter Devora! I'm hoping this isn't going to look too dingy.

I've done 2 coats now on a bit of wood, I'll try it out tomorrow.

Yes, my putty is a very cool creamy kind of greige. I wanted to tone down the warmth in the floor a bit. Yours is a lot more golden brown, will tone with the terracotta.

Ok, it looks nice against the floor and the white... but now I'm worrried about the work surface - I think the colour is too close.

It's a light oak - laminate - we can't face real wood for the upkeep - the floor is bad enough (stains really easily).

DH hates it. He prefers the India Yellow, which does look nice against the white and the floor but now we are stuck on whether the worktop should be dark or light.

I'm worried a dark wood (walnut) would clash with the floor which is very orange-red.

Might be a bit late but we've got Little Greene 'Grace' in our dark kitchen, its think it contrasts nicely with the terracotta tiles, and looks good offset against pure white. I'm no interior decorator though, so your paint shop lady might not agree!

We have Dulux DH Straw which isn't dissimilar to your India Yellow but is a little less strident. We have a terracotta floor, pale cream units and oak and black granite (around the underhung sinks) worktops and I think it works well.

Shop's closed today so will go tomorrow.

Are your worktops dark or light oak?

Farrow & Ball Matchstick works well with terracotta tones (well I think so, anyway!)
