If I had enough time / inclination / money I would ...

... have a light switch installed on the landing upstairs that meant I could turn on the light in the hall downstairs.

ffs you can turn on the upstairs lights from downstairs but not the other way round. horrid on dark nights or mornings (or when a batty neighbour hammered loudly on the door at midnight a few months ago).

What minor irritation would you change in your house but don't because the cost wouldn't really be worth it?

I would get all our light switches replaced. The guys who installed them were muppets and they are all wonky to various degrees. They are a constant annoyance but it would be such a faff to get them all re-done.

I would change the remaining old bog standard ugly radiators that are in my hall and sitting room (hiding behind the sofa) to match the lovely column ones I have upstairs in the loft conversion.

I would plant a green roof on my ugly flat roof extension and I would get proper drainage in the lawn so it wasn't a bog and so it would stop the dog constantly coming in with muddy paws!!

One day.......

... I would tear down the ugly concrete pre-fab garage and replace it with one attached to the house...

... I would pull up the too-narrow, badly laid ugly paved driveway and replace it with a nicer looking, wider, more usuable one...

... I would replace the ugly upvc front door with a beautiful wooden one and paint it pale blue...

... I would replace on of the fence panels with a gate so we could have direct access to the canal behind our house...

So many wishes, so little money.

Ahh light switches I know the problem, we have now replaced all of our light switches with dimmers (yes every single light switch) and two way switches on stairs.

My husband is really weird and hates bright lights and turns them all down low, we couldn't live without dimmers (and my bedside light so I can actually see to read!) that's why they were a priority.

Go on holiday for a fortnight so that I can have, while away...

The whole house rewired, because there is only about ONE plug in each room, in a ridiculous location too

Get a professional to redecorate all the rooms because we are useless/lazy

Get a new front door that doesn't let a massive draft in

Replace the missing fireplace (honestly, who leaves all the blinds and lightbulbs when they move - but takes a fireplaces?!)

Another one with wonky light switches. Mine are also on upside down, they work and to be honest I didn't notice untill we were changing the outside light and SF pointed it out. Now it irritates the life out of me although clearly not enough to do anything about it.

Also need proper drainage in the lawn, thats next years project since this year is proving a little on the damp side.

Also need to decorate through out - this is in motion very slow motion, and I want a new front door.

I need another room downstairs (town house) and we are debating if it it worthwhile building a proper sunroom with bifold doors and perhaps some nice glass atrium thingy. Will never see that money back so would literally be only for our enjoyment rather than adding value.

Or to put on a conservatory - I hate them with a passion, but will only be a few thousand rather that the cost of the above work, and will give us the space with less cost. Practical but I hate them. So we go round in circles.

Also want, and am going to soon, replace the shower in the ensuite and put down new flooring and re decorate.

Whole house could do with new carpets too....

But mainly if money was no issue, I would cut my losses here and move. We bought this as a tempoary stop gap, and while its a nice house and thankfully turned out to be a much nicer area than anticipated, its not where I want to be. And certainly not where I want to be stuck. I hate that I have lived here for 4 years. I've never lived in a house for 4 years since I was a child!

I also really want a new sofa. I have no reason to change this one, its very comfortable and only a couple of years old, and was very expensive - but I fancy a change. I can't justify changing it so I won't but I would like to!

Another one with wonky light switches that don't quite do what you expect then too!
What is it with electricians?

Yorky · 10/07/2012 18:57

Nelly - would you like a fire surround, marble back and base, wood surround and shelf? we've just taken it out to reopen a doorway

DestinationUnknown · 10/07/2012 19:18

Grin at all the rubbish light switches!

I would also re pave my garden. it is tiny so in theory not too much cash, but the mess and noise and hassle and cost relative to the space is just too much to bother with.

Every time I stay at my in-laws' I sit in bed staring at the slightly off-kilter knobs on the built-in wardrobes and wonder how they can bear to live with them (although they are in the spare room so they probably don't even realise). This annoys me soooo much it is irrational.

Ooh I lay in bed last night thinking about this!

I would
...get our crappy loft conversion re done including putting an ensuite up & move the stairs up out of our bedroom to the landing
...get all doors replaced with reclaimed doors. Dd1's door & the kitchen door are the only ones in the house that actually close.
...replace all the ugly radiators.
...decorate our front room
...remove the meter cupboard from the hallway
...replace the side gate with one wide enough to fit the bike trailer thro FFS.
...have back garden landscaped, shed replaced & crazy paving at the front removed.

There's more.

Gah I hate living in a doer upper sometimes.
