It is currently beige/cream/magnolia typw colour
We have the same (almost) colour carpet that will not be changed.
Banisters are white satin as are the skirting boards.

not sure I could handle a really dark colour.

I've used Sanctuary Bamboo in my hall and landing and I blimmin love it. Not as green as it sounds, more like farrow and ball pale hound if you know the f&b chart. Calm and classy I'd say but not dull like cream.

You could use slightly different shades / tones of the same colour card on different walls, darker on the furthest away wall if the hallway is long. This should create some movement and impression of light and shade so it is not all the same flat colour.

I am a big fan of green with white and have used a selection from Dulux Highland Falls and Gooseberry Fool cards in different houses. Highland Falls worked better in the one with less natural daylight.

ooh now I have gooseberry fool 5 in the dining room and love it..
I had a look at highland falls...will get a tester.. I like the sound of pale hound..

thanks for the tips..

I know you said you don't want dark, but I went from Magnolia to a dark red in a similar hallway in my previous property, and it immediately felt warmer and cosier. I loved it.

I second rhubarb about embracing cosy. I suggest a classy turquoise.

My interior designer SIL told me to
Paint neutral colours and add colour with accessories - pictures, pottery, curtains. Worked a treat
