Veenered Bureau - paint?

Probably a really obvious question, but I have a veenered bureau that I would like to sand and paint. I know nothing about veener, can it be sanded and then painted on?

watching with great interest as it's something I keep wondering.

I've started using Annie sloane chalk paint on furniture. it's brilliant and you really can use it without sanding or any prep. Gives a great finish and my friend used it on some beams that had been painted black thirty years ago with great results. They do a really easy to apply soft wasx to finish off. Good luck!
