We've had a quote to flooring though our house from:

vinyl to the porch/utility and kitchen - £436 for 31.2 sq metre.
laminate to the living/dining room, 3 good side single bedrooms, study & very long hall way £2160 for 90 sq metres.
wool carpet to the bedroon at half price - £342 22.8sq metres

All this includes VAT & fitting & grippers/latex on the concrete before laying the vinyl & underlay to laminate & carpet. Laminate is a very hardwearing stuff (he fitted out a local bank with it so very tough).

The chap is in independant business, someone we know & who's been in the business for over 40 yrs.

Is this a lot of am I being silly to think we really can have it cheaper?

I've had a quote from a larger business for the laminate floor (only) & I though that was expensive at £1700!!!!

I guess it goes without saying that you could buy and lay the laminate yourself. I (a little female) have laid good quality laminate throughout our current house and in our previous house too. It's very satisfying.

There is no way I can lay it - the place is huge and I haven't got the time (nor does DH) so we have to get someone in!

DH has said that he is happy with the price. If he's happy so am I - he's the one paying for it!

His quote is a little higher than the large business but you'll probably get better workmanship from the independant chap. Larger businesses often sub-contract in fitters at the cheapest possible price resulting in an attitude of slapping it in as quickly as possible so that they can move onto the next job. Personally if I was paying someone to do it I'd go for the smaller business even if it is a little more expensive.

That is very true Sophia. I called him this morning to order! Yipee!!!!!!!
