wall lighting - layout advice please!

We currently have four wall lights in our living room. We inherited the layout from the previous house owners, however we've updated the wall lights themselves with some lovely modern ones from John Lewis. We're in the process of redecorating the room so now is our chance to change the layout of the wall lights to suit us.

Two of them are on a wall where we'll definitely put a sofa so that makes sense. The other two are on a wall with a radiator and a door and so not much room for sofa/chair. They therefore look a bit lost on the wall with no defining reference. I don't want to lose these two but feel just having the two above a sofa would look odd.

Does anyone please have a view of how wall lights should be laid out? For example, should they always be in twos? Or should they only be placed where there is seating etc? I love them and the fact that they're a useful but they're restricting our use of the room.

Thanks!

You don't have to have wall lights.

Drawing, sitting and dining rooms rarely need the room bathed in light anyway, because you use them at night. Much cosier to have low level lighting in the form of uplighters and table lamps.

I'd perhaps keep two wall lights either side of the sofa, and then have lighting at different levels. Ask your electrician to install a lamp circuit (so you can switch on table lamps with one central switch).
