Moving house - removals

Last time, I did it all myself as didn't have much. But next time will be a big job. Is it better to pay for just the basic removals service and do the packing yourself, or pay the extra for them to pack?

I imagine that if you pack yourself and then, for example, all your plates are broken when you unpack, this could make resolution of any dispute difficult as the removals co. will say it's your fault for not packing properly and you say it's their fault for dropping the box or whatever.

So is it best to just get them to do it all so that if there are any problems, it can only be their fault?

I have moved twice now, first time I did all by myself, which later I felt is not worth it.It is the tiredness and the tension to get ready.Second time I told the removals had to d o it.By the time they got the house ready,I had to do the kitchen only.So it was easy.
I would strongly recommend removals.

Get quotes for both - you'll probably find that the full packing service isn't all that much extra. You're right that you won't be insured against breakages if you pack yourself. I think it's well worth paying for as it takes a lot of the stress out of it!

Bumping because we're (hopefully!) about to move and I'm wondering the same thing. The thought of having it all packed for me is SUCH a luxury, given we have a 14mo and both work full time. But not sure I can justify the cost. Someone give me an excuse!

Second BananaPie - it wasn't as much extra as I'd expected, and cut the stress massively. And you don't pay anything for a quote!

Crossed posts with BananaPie. This is exactly the sort of thing I need to hear :o

I have had removals quotes for around £500 (3 bed terraced house, moving 40 miles away), with an extra £300 for packing.

I've only moved maybe five times in my entire life, my last relocation was from CT to NY and I had a lot of stuff. Surprisingly to say each time I've gotten a mover and in my opinion they take the stress out of it all.. They have alot of big strong guys working with them ;-).

Removals - always! Having moved lots in the last 7yrs and done both, I'll always find money for packing service! They do it so quickly and efficiently, it's not worth the hassle! It definitely reduces stress!

I would opt for the packing service. They can pack a whole house so quickly. It really does reduce the stress.
