Thinking of moving to Edinburgh one day

We've got this idea of moving to Edinburgh when the DC's have finally left home. DH knew some students there many years ago and he thinks it's a great place. I don't want to dampen his enthusiasm and dreams! The areas he liked are Stockbridge, Newington. Does anybody know these areas and have any advice on them. Thanks very much. Or on any other fairly central areas.

How strange, I just logged on to look up places to live in Edinburgh! (fantasy territory for me too - DH company has offices their and he could easily transfer, but he's not sure he wants to leave London.)
We lived in Dean Village very briefly which I remember being nice.
I'm interested in finding out about outskirts of Edinburgh, so if anyone has any tips I'd be grateful to hear them. (for a family with young kids)

Lived in Morningside.
Very family friendly, Edinburgh is small so in London terms, the outskirts are the centre!
Very cold in winter if you are used to the South, but not as rainy as Glasgow(where is?)
The people are a bit "Bostonian" for my liking but be your own judge!

I have mixed feelings, on one hand it is a nice, historic walkable city. But on the other, there are constant roadworks, unrelenting greyness of the stone with very few leafy streets ( no nice leafy boulevards like in France) and the cold can get muchy.

Nah, think Kent would be a better option.

Edinburgh dweller here. I love this place, just wish it would stop raining this week.

Stockbridge has a nice village feel to it, I'd say the same for Morningside and Bruntsfield. These are popular areas so expect to pay a premium. Newington is very studenty but has lots of lovely large houses.

Edinburgh has a great vibe esp at Festival time. I highly recommend moving here.

Bostonian Cheeky buggers

Never said anything wrong with Bostonians, take what you want from that!

We wouldn't afford a huge house although I love the look of them. Those townhouses look amazing if we won Euromillions!! Morningside sounds nice too. What about round Leith and Newhaven. Would you get better value for money there. I'd not be bothered about a garden as neither of us likes gardening much. Some period features would be nice.

I've no idea how anyone can live there - it's fecking freezing.

Leith is ok, some nice restaurants. But very mixed housing and ultra urban (very little greenery) to boot.

I like Newington, especially the houses backing on to the golf course and Holyrood park. It is like being in a suburban oasis in the middle of the city, walking distance to the grittier, more interesting parts.

We lived in Comely Bank, just next to Stockbridge, in the early 90s. There are some lovely big tenement flats with great features though the parking is difficult - though that's true of lots of parts of Edinburgh. Trinity is also nice and walkable to town if you're reasonably fit.

i suppose it depends on your budget.... newington flats a bit studenty so no a great idea if you are looking at tenements but probably ok in a double upper.

I live near Leith and am moving to Leith links soon. It's very mixed in leith, lots of good and bad stuff going on. A great mix of people but it does have it's fair share of drug and drink problems. Still we have decided to stay in the area and bring up our children there, so it's not awful!

Stockbridge is really nice, as is Trinity which lays between Leith, Newhaven and Stockbridge and is a bit more affordable. Newington s really over run with students these days. But Brintsfield and morningside are also great. Portobello is nice and by the sea and not as far out as you'd think. It's got a village/small town thing going on too.

Cramond is love;y but really really far out of town and lots of traffic between there and town, beautiful though and expensive. Millionaries row!

Grew up in Newington, now live in Morningside. Morningside is wonderful, very nice local shops and amenities. Fab for kids.

It's prohibitively expensive to have a house with garden round here, but we live in a gorgeous tenement flat, two bed, currently worth about 200k.

Edinburgh is truly amazing, beautiful place to live.
