Kitchen worktops

We're thinking of replacing the kitchen worktops (the units are fine but the worktops are in a state). Anyone have any experience/advice? Where is good to buy such things?

What is there already? And more importantly what do you like and what is your budget?

It's a galley kitchen, I'd like something in a fairly dark colour but not granite. Don't want to spend a fortune but happy to pay for something I like.

Get at least 5 quotes, 2 from high street chains 3 from independent type fitters. Best way to get right advice for you!

Granite is heavy & too posh sometimes; wood isn't that durable & a minefield (the best woods are very expensive). I like natural materials, but plastic coated has its place, too.

My advice would be don't get wooden work tops or you will be replacing them again in a short while!

Slate? That's what we are going to put in, having seen them used and abused in the kitchen of the local stone business.
