just had a huge bookcase for the wall behind sofa
but i really dont know what colour to paint it.
i was going to use f&b pointing eggshell- same colour as the wall but now im thinking black /drk grey /blue? to make a feature.
dh thinks its so huge it should blend in.i think why not make it stand out.
any ideas?

You cannot really make it blend in as there will be books in it. Probably better to go darker and "shrink" it.

Same colour as the wall would be odd, very odd. The drama of repainting it when you want to redecorate too Shock

A darker colour would be better.

We have a huge bookcase that we painted the same colour as the skirting boards which is a slightly darker colour than the walls and it looks fab.

wfrances · 01/06/2012 13:38

the sofa is black ,so cant paint it black
any colour ideas?
the room is very pale ,dark wood floor and furnishings
black sofas/fireplace
no colour apart from green leafy plants
-colonial look

Our bookcase is white, but so are our walls :)

Rhubarbgarden · 01/06/2012 14:13

Same as Hulababy. Can't beat plain white - and it's perfect for a colonial look.

wfrances · 01/06/2012 14:22

thanks
ok so def not the same colour of the wall which is pale cream.
either white-like doors/skirting/picture rail or a dramatic dark color.

I would paint it a slightly warmer neutral than pointing.I have bookshelves painted in Skimmming Stone and walls in Strong White.I don't like pure white though.Alternatively you can try darker bluey/grey colours.I'm sure F&B have some darker colours in their picture gallery,on the website that look good. However this would definitely make it into a 'feature' and will take away from your colonial look.

noddyholder · 01/06/2012 14:28

I would paint it the same colour as the wall if it is built in likethis and paint the interior back in a deeper colour like dark bluey grey to offset and candles ornaments etc

Pannacotta · 01/06/2012 17:15

I would also paint it the same colour as the wall but put a different colour at the back.
Have seen a lovely example of this with bright green, sounds yuck but looked very good.
Will try and find the link.

How about using the colour matchy bit on the F & B website. We did this, and ended up painting our bookcase London Stone, with Clunch walls, but I think they also suggest that for Pointing.

We had an interior designer help us "pull together" the living room in her old house - that was one of her ideas, and it made a scrappy old pine bookcase look absolutely fab. We've moved now, and it's in the porch - people regularly comment on how good it looks.

wfrances · 01/06/2012 17:53

ive got the f&b book,
i will look at london stone , thanks

It looks a bit bleuch on on paper, but works in real life - honest!

Mum2Fergus · 01/06/2012 18:38

Download Houzz app or they have gull website too...its jam packed with ideas and pictures. Ive used it to redo whole house...and its free!

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 01/06/2012 19:16

I've done the background colour thing before.

Walls were a pale colour, outer shell of bookcase was very slightly darker than the white woodwork then the internal of each section and the wall behind it (was flush with the wall and open backed) were the same bold colour.

It was really lovely.

wfrances · 02/06/2012 12:26

thanks for all your ideas
my dsis is coming over later with her f&b tester pot collection so hopefully it will be finished soon
