Having kitchen fitted next month and the kitchen designer has sent me designs which position fridge freezer next to oven-thought this was considered a bad idea-any views ?Thanks

Confused I thought they had to be away from each other. Isn't it meant to be a triangle with sink, oven and fridge on the points and something inbetween?

I might be wrong but even if it is safe I don't think I would like it.

ArcticRoll · 30/05/2012 22:32

That's what I thought oreocrumb-it looks wrong as well as sounding as if I'd have huge electricity bills.

Presumably the oven will waste heat through its sides, which will then warm up the freezer, which will then need extra electricity to cool it back down. Sounds like a bad idea.

Unless you have a teeny kitchen I should think a kitchen designer could come up with something better, iirc I think the triangle thing might be the best use design, but I think Redbindy's point about the heat is right too.

PigletJohn · 31/05/2012 11:09

for heat transfer, even if they have to be close, it is best to have a gap between them, what used to be called a tray-space, or where you hang a towel.

ArcticRoll · 31/05/2012 20:47

Thanks for replies-designer is saying that oven is totally insulated so no heat transfer but I don't feel happy about having fridge next to oven. Also it's a fifties style Smug fridge freezer and she wants to enclose it with unit above which I think will look wrong.

I think you need to ditch your designer to be honest Hmm.

Woman sounds like she hasn't got a clue. Are you wanting to use this company in particular? If so I would ask to work with someone else, and if not I would go somewhere else.

I'm no good at design so I use these services and come out thinking wow, how clever I never would have come up with that. The fact that you come out thinking 'thats all wrong' is not a good thing! Don't waste your money.

Its fine to put an oven next to a fridge.
The heat of the oven and a fridge is dispersed at the back. - that's why there is air ways for this in the back of the oven housing. Fridges can also kick out a bit of heat themselves.
Every Kitchen company including HJ, JL, Roundhouse use this practice and the fridge manufacturers have no issues with this either.
Working Triangles are not the be all and end all.
Have a look at some of the beautiful kitchen Mags and you will see that this isn't always done even thought there is the space to do so. Its the same concept as putting a hob over a built under oven

jamaisjedors · 31/05/2012 21:48

We are going to do this because I don't want the oven under the hob, I want pan drawers under there, and the oven then has to be on the opposite side of the room.

Oreocrumbs-have looked at Ikea, B and Q etc and wanted something in between those in price and quality and the high end companies. A friend recommended this kitchen company and I love the units-matt white handleless slab units and nobody else seems to do these for the price and quality. The planner has come up with lots of good ideas just feel uncomfortable about the fridge scenario.

We had a built in fridge freezer next to our built in double oven in the first new build we bought (10 years ago). We had no issues at all and our electricty bill wasn't any higher than normal.

Both the oven and the fridge freezer worked effectively with no issues.
