Would painted (ie not carpeted) stairs be really noisy?

We're thinking about ripping up our old stairs carpet and painting the wood but I'm unsure about the practicalities in terms of noise, marking, chipping etc. has anyone got wood stairs who can share their experiences good or bad. We're detached so no neighbours to worry about but do have 2 noisy boys!

yup bare wood noisy. A runner down the middle might help.

We have painted stairs, and so long as you have a no shoes house, and walk up a d down (yes you DD3 who sounds like a herd of elephants), it's not too bad.

I always think they look nice but very slippy

Yes, very noisy, dont do it!

Incredibly slippy - we had this in a rented house, and I had to remember never to wear socks when walking up or down the stairs.

I hated our painted stairs.
Slipped down them when 6 months pregnant - scared the life out of me.

I think painted with a runner and rails looks great but as speaking with someone with 2 ds too wouldnt consider just painted!

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 26/05/2012 22:34

slippy and super noisy I'm afraid

Ours are sanded and varnished ( not painted) and we don't notice the noise particularly. No shoes allowed inside the house so that probably helps. Not sure it's that slippery - maybe I'm just used to it.
