Moving to London-Advice needed please

I am in Newcastle,moving to London because of my DH new offer.No idea about London except sight seeing.Advice needed on good place to live and good school,since my DS is in YR now.

Whereabouts is your DH's office? How big a commute to work is he looking at? What sort of accommodation are you looking for and what is your budget (not being nosey but it does make a difference!).

You do really need to say what your budget is, and also more info about what you're looking for - London is HUGE and there are so many different areas and different price brackets, say as much as you can about what you want/need and how much you can spend and there will be tons of people who can help.

And do you definitely have to be in London or just able to commute to London?

you could go to Wanstead which is on central line to Holborn and cheaper than many other nice areas in further London (even though it's almost Essex ). Quite a nice High street there and a bit villagey also many green spaces. I think it's about 20-30min on the tube.

YOu really need to give a budget.

Um.... I think you need to think budget first then sort out where to live. Lots of folk live 'out' and commute to closest mainline station. A 3bed house near us is well over £1.5mil.

We are going to rent to start with,may be in 6 months time will buy a house.I looking for a max £1000

You may want to just think 'bugger it' and take the opportunity to rent somewhere really central (it will be small though) and enjoy London Life whilst planning where you want to buy. You'll only really know by speaking to colleagues and visiting places.

If you have ~£1000 pcm, you may be better off looking for a garage to rent separately to the house/flat you rent. Finding a house or flat supplied with a garage for that sort of money is going to be tricky in any area that's ok

£1000 per month with a garage?? Good luck! You have to work hard to find a property with a garden at that price. You can also look West on the Central Line, you could probably find something reasonable. Ruislip it's within budget, on central line and has a garage.

I am thinking that somewhere with a hefty commute might fit the bill, but travel costs will he huuuuge. Whats the ususal these days £2,3 grand?

FYI Ruislip is in zone 5 so a zone 1-5 monthy is £191.30 or annually is £1992.00. Some employers off a season ticket loan as part of the package.

Leytonstone in the link is a bit more expensive for flats by you can a 2-bed place in Wanstead if not right by the tube. It will be with modest decor though.
Gatwick is cheap due to plane noise - can you stand it OP? and it's not nice at all in more urban areas, though I don't know crawley.

Ruisliip to Holborn though is AGES on the tube! opp end of london almost. and the stops are 'long'. why is garage so important?

oh yes, Bromley is good for families, see hifi link. It looks far but has a extra speedy link to Victoria (can use Oyster I think - or if not it's quite cheap) andthan Victoria to Holborn with one tube change in Green Park) but very quick.

Well I did the commute from West London to my office in Holborn for years and it wasn't that long. I was lucky as I was in-between a Central and Piccadilly line station (Covent Garden easy walk to office in Holborn) but the Central line was almost always my choice as it was quicker, more reliable, not as cram packed and usually cleaner than the Piccadilly line.

Holborn is pretty central so West is very commutable and reasonably affordable for London.

How about Croydon? Sort of half way between Holborn and Gatwick.
