Stair runners - opinions please!

I quite fancy having stair carpet as a runner but wonder what happens on the landing? Does it continue as a runner or morph into full wall to wall carpet at the top?

I have lovely original tiles on the hall floor which I don't want to cover up - will runner look odd if it starts at the bottom of the stairs and doesn't match in any way with the tile pattern? Carpet currently is plain but I fancy some smart stripes.

Looks good in the magazine photos but a cleaning nightmare at the edges so it's a no for me. Still looking at normal stripy carpet for my landing and stairs though.

We had this in our last house and it looked great but it was hard to keep the edges clean - they were painted off white - so I would give that some thought.
Had to clean the edges with a cloth at least twice a week, which was quite time consuming.
It woudl look fine against tiles though, runners look good in old houses.

I shall have a runner up the stairs one day! I have stair rods and everything all ready and waiting!

I don't know about what happens at the top of the stairs though. We have laminate on the landing, naff I know, but it is lovely laminate and wipes up easily! and I have those little step carpets on each step, but the fluff fairly accumulates around the edges.

We have a stair runner in our house with stair rods. As people have said there is some up keep required but it's never bothered me too much . On the landing we have a full carpet . We picked out one of the main colours in the runner for the landing carpet . It looks great and I'm very happy with it . I took advice from our local carpet shop ( an independent ) and they were fantastic in helping us colour match .

We've got a stair runner and it looks great. I didn't go for the stair rods as i've had them before and i was always tripping over the bloody things - plus makes it hard to properly clean the carpet.

Goes to full carpet on landings. I did want to continue the runner theme through but it would have been too tricky and bitty to match the stripes and keep them centre.

here is ours above so - stripy carpet as a runner on stairs then fitted carpet on landing, keping encaustic tiles in hall- Snap! I think it works but the edges do get dusty so you need a feather duster to hand!
