DIY or housekeeping?Pax system.

hi we are presently decorating and are trying to decide on the configuration for Pax wardrobes in ikea.My head is boggling and I wondered if anyone has tried a configurationm that they would recommend?it is for both myself and hubby.

I used to work for IKEA and designed the PAX system. You need to work out what your clothes you want to hang vs clothes you want to fold! (or storage etc) . How many long dresses/coats do you have? What width of wardrobes are you talking? If you have 200cm, you could have one 100cm and x2 50cm units arranged either with the large unit in the middle and two x50 cm units either side.

We always advised, work out what you have first. Personally I have nothing that is long, so my PAX is split in the middle and I have it double hanging. I also required no shelving because i have MALM drawers. Hope this helps. Have you downloaded the PAX planner to have a play at home?

We have 11 pax wardrobes. some of them are just used as shelving, some have hanging spaces. We designed each of them specifically for the person using them, and what needs to be stored, as above. So height of hanging rails was paramount, for example. You have to be able to reach them!

The planner was really useful, not least for printing the shopping list!

We currently have a 4m run of Pax wardrobes in the play room, DH and I have 2 doubles and 2 singles in our room, ds1 has 3 singles, ds2 has 2 singles, and the office has 1 double so in total we have 6 doubles and 9 singles

Clothing wise (as you can see we use them for a multitude of stuff) we have for me and DH a double hanging rail and a single hanging rail, we use the plastic tubs with rails for everything else as you can overfill them and divide them with storage boxes. So t-shirts/vests/jumpers of mine are in the plastic tubs.

My two sons, eldest has 3 hanging rails, over 2 single wardrobes, 1 for uniform, 1 for tops and 1 for trousers. He is 9 but has very long legs so his trousers are hung up. Ds2 is only just 6 so he has 1 hanging rail for uniform and all his tops etc are in those plastic tubs.

Measure how much hanging space you currently use and then work around that. We are lucky that we started buying Pax 13 years ago, and still have the original ones, and our Ikea is very close by meaning a trip back to get a hanging rail or tub is a few miles away meaning it is easy.

Dh is 6ft 3" so his hanging rail is at the top of the wardrobe, then we hung his shirts in it to work out where the shelf would go then the tubs.

We spent a long time counting the holes to work out how much space each tub took up and remember the hinges prevent you from using certain holes. This was way before the planner!

I'm glad you mentioned about the hinges..I should have mentioned that too..if you are having doors mother you need to make a note of which holes the hinges will use for the doors before you get carried away with shelving etc!

It's great that you've had your PAX for so long :) It really is a tremendous product and one that can definitely grow with your needs and your family.

when we redesigned our bedrooms we got the tall pax system for DD and DS rooms. They are perfect for what we needed. In DD room she has the wardrobes all along one wall. We have hanging space and a shelf above in the first wardrobe, drawer space and shelves in second one and hanging space and drawers at the bottom of third one. Mirror doors in middle one so she can do her hair and admire herself as girls do!

I have to say it is the perfect system. DH and I built it ourself and it wasnt any problem, looks professionally done.

Yes, we bought the original Pax in 1999 and have collapsed them and rebuilt them 3 times.

Sturdy, adaptable, and cheap. What more could you ask for?
