Has anyone painted an ikea kitchen?

We have seen a painted kitchen that we love but can't afford.

Just wondered if anyone had painted one of the ikea wooden ones? Apparently it invalidates the guarantee but I'm not worried about that, just don't want it to chip off and look a total mess.

Which model did you paint? Was it difficult to sand off the varnished layer? Would you recommend getting a decorator to do that?

Any experiences/advice v welcome.

I have wondered exactly this so will be following with interest. I have painted an IKEA PAX wardrobe reasonably successfully. It was the Nexus Beech one and I painted it in a silk paint to match the wall. It looked fine and lasted several years unitl we got rid of it for other reasons.

All depends what door your going for.
If a flat door then taking off the layer would be easy. if its shaker or grooved then the internal corners might be a problem

You would be much better off buying a 'raw door' and accessories ready for painting to your choice

I have friends who painted a wood shaker Ikea kitchen. They had the doors professionally spray painted as they were advised this is a tougher finish and it was still much cheaper than other brands. About 5 years on it still looks fabulous.

I have also sucessfully painted an Ikea tidaholm oak shaker kitchen. I first painted it 3 years ago in F&B New White and have recently done so again in Little Greene Portland Stone. I was also apprehensive at first but it has come up great, I would say go for it. I lightly sanded the doors then used International primer followed by 2 coats of oil based eggshell.
