A plumber has grossly overcharged me and I paid him before I realised what a little job it was. The job shud've bin about £120 - 150 - he's charged me £450 !! I've since had three chats with other plumbers - got a written quote on a letterhead from one of them - now what do I do ?
I'm going to ring him up and not be girly girly, going to state my 'concern' - no, I'm going to say .... I'm a bit at a loss to understand why it came to so much? - no, I'm going to ask for a break down of his invoice - parts first and then labour ... no I'm going to go in all guns blazing ? What's the best line to take ? I am so naive and daft - feel stupid ... altho I'm good at complaining in shops and by letter .... how can I deal with this ?

You can shout and stamp your feet all you want, but it won't make a pick of difference if you've already paid him. Right it off to experience, and next time remember, written quote up front and don't pay until you have inspected the work.

oh I know I know! thanks for replying. Natasha ... that's what I'm going to ask him - he's just sent me an invoice ... replacing this and that (other men say parts come to about £25 ) and at the bottom it says 'parts and labour £450' - So you don't think I can appeal to his better nature then, Gomow ?
It's a relative's flat, so he phoned and mentioned just verbally it would be about £250. So I said go ahead and do it and send me the invoice. And that's what I got. !!

Have you paid?

If you've paid I doubt very much you'll get anywhere.

If you haven't paid, definitely ask for an explanation. And I'd refuse to pay more than £250 unless you're satisfied it was lots more work than expected. Getting it below £250 might be hard since you did authorise him to spend that much.

Thanks for replying - I am such a naive dope !! Kicking myself !

Am going to give it a go asking for an explanation tho.
