Is this kitchen fitter taking the piss?

OK so he does everything himself, and in fairness we need a new ceiling, plastering, lights etc too. He's not doing tiling or flooring. But his quote inc. VAT is 6 grand!!!!!!!!

Is this really how much it costs?

Does that include materials?

Dinosaurhunter · 26/04/2012 17:40

My kitchen fitter charged £2000 that was just literally just fitting the kichen no extras .

Dinosaurhunter · 26/04/2012 17:40

Sorry that made no sense !

DaisySteiner · 26/04/2012 17:42

Mine charged 140 pounds a day and it took 2 1/2 days. Unless it's an enormous kitchen I'd say he is definitely taking the piss!

Alargeglassofred · 26/04/2012 17:46

Our fitter was £2000, but only for fitting kitchen and appliances . If there are electrics, ceiling etc... Depends what work needs doing.

Alargeglassofred · 26/04/2012 17:47

And took him 2 weeks to fit! A large kitchen. Depends on size etc too

Dinosaurhunter · 26/04/2012 17:49

Ours took 6 days to fit .

IHeartKingThistle · 26/04/2012 18:22

Includes materials - I hope! He reckons it's a 2-week job.

Sound high to me even with the extras.
Ask for a full breakdown and get another 3 quotes.
Is he qualified to do the electric work?

IHeartKingThistle · 26/04/2012 18:57

Yeah the kitchen company gave us his name. We haven't budgeted even nearly that much for fitting Sad

Fitting quotes will differ where you are in the country.

but sounds like he's fitting in space though

where are you?

MerryMarigold · 26/04/2012 19:01

Taking the mick. Ikea quoted us 2K for just fitting the kitchen and nothing extra. I got someone else in who charged 200 per day. Took 3 days, so 600. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. Look around for someone who is more of a multi tasker. People who say they are 'kitchen fitters' charge more for the same thing, like people who do weddings. Kitchens are not that hard to fit.

MerryMarigold · 26/04/2012 19:04

I would get him to break down the quote. Perhaps get a builder to quote on the plastering etc. It may not even be necessary. Our builders charged 800 quid to re-do our ceiling and plaster it which is about 25 foot squared. I'm sure you could get this done a lot cheaper with different tradesmen, but may take longer.

clam · 26/04/2012 19:09

Depends on the size of the kitchen and what sort of changes you're making. About 10 years ago, in our first house and when we were bean-counting, MFI charged £1500 for replacing like-for-like (so no new sockets/gas or water pipes etc..)
Next house was a much bigger job so more (but am Blush to say can't remember how much, sorry)

crazygracieuk · 26/04/2012 19:10

Asking the kitchen shop for a fitter was probably why you have an I've quote. Ask an independent fitter. - unless you have really complicated requirements like new electrics and plumbing it shouldn't be 6k !!

crazygracieuk · 26/04/2012 19:12

Agree about getting a detailed quote. We did things like remove the old kitchen cabinets, tiles and flooring and built the cabinets (Ikea flat pack) which saved us money.

MerryMarigold · 26/04/2012 19:57

IHeartKingThistle. I am in London, so not some 'oop north' Wink price either. If you are a Londoner, I can PM you his details.

IHeartKingThistle · 26/04/2012 20:19

In Surrey so prob too far, but thanks! We have the detailed quote and tbh everything just seems a bit higher than it should be, and then with VAT it's been hoiked up.

I think we'll go back to him and say we haven't got that kind of money and are going to go with separate tradespeople even if it is more of a headache. See what he says!

Do get some other quotes in to bargain with too.
