Extractor chimney hoods - any recommendations?

We are of course looking for a very effective kitchen extractor hood (preferably chimney style), for a cheap price!

Anyone chuffed with theirs? Or any particular brands to go for / avoid?

We are knocking down a wall, so will have a good sized kitchen diner, so am thinking we may need to spend a bit more than I was hoping!

no, but don't let anyone talk you into getting a recirculating hood. You need one that extracts the smells, steam and fat outside the house.

I'm also looking. Haven't chosen yet, but will look for the highest extraction rate with the lowest possible noise. Also no glass as I think it would be a nighhtmare to clean all the time! Also will try to check and see that the extractor 'grid' goes across as much of the underside as possible, also would prefer one with halogen rather than fluorescent light... can you see why I haven't chosen one yet :o

Better - can I ask how much are you going to spend? We've gone over budget on everything with this kitchen and I really don't want to spend loads with the extractor hood.

There are others at around £100, but bit concerned they will be a bit crap.

Ours is Britannia. Very, very noisy

I got a stainless steel one by Elica recentky. I wanted a 1000mm wide one, so it would be wider than the hob to suck up any fumes that drifted sideways a bit, but there only seem to be 900mm ones now. The stainless is very easy to clean.

It is in a 1000mm gap between wall units, with a top cab above it, and 50mm spacers each side. As the cooker is not on an external wall, the duct goes through the top cab and runs along the tops of the adjacent wall cabs to the outside wall. With multi speeds it is not noisy unless you put it in speed 3.

Which I don't recommend, it's on it's 2nd repair in a year and doesn't work that well at the best of times. Steam runs down the front of it, dripping into your cooking and leaving constant water marks on the steel and it doesn't really pull in the fumes from the two rings at the front of the hob.

Incidently, we also bought an Aeg oven and hob at the same time, both of which I wouldn't buy again. We put virtually the same oven in our kitchen in the last house, it was fab so we bought it again for this house - big mistake :(

the AEG advert doesn't seem to say how many cubic metres per hour it extracts, which is poor.

IIRC the AEG brand name was bought by Electrolux, after AEG went bust.

PigletJohn - Maximum extraction rate 560m³/h. I wonder if quality has dropped under Electrolux, although the price certainly haven't.

I'm also looking for one & Boots Elecrtical are very reasonable so I'm gonna buy my double oven, dishwasher, hob & hood from them. Definately avoid glass. I'm thinking of going for this one:

That gets some good reviews Yankee, particularly for the price.

I'm thinking about spending a bit more now, after speaking with my builder / kitchen fitter.

Waaay more than we intended to spend originally but actually it is brilliant, quite noisy but super-effective on high speeds if you need it but fairly quiet on the lower speed which is what we use most of the time. Fantastic halogen light, and it's easy to clean too.

We bought an AEG one, it is definitely worth ensuring it extracts outside. We have had it over two years and are really pleased with it. The filters also go into the dishwasher to be cleaned which is great. The extractor fan is pretty impressive, when it is on the highest speed the ivy on the fence opposite the kitchen wall look as if they are in a tornado !
