Decorating a bedroom for 4 yr old DS?

TheScottishPlayer · 22/04/2012 21:41

DS will be moving into a bigger bedroom in the summer to accommodate a bigger bed. He's keen on having an 'Octonauts' theme which I'm equally keen to avoid given he's likely to grow out of it quickly.

Any suggestions on 'themes' for a 4 year old that won't be too babyish very quickly? His furniture is white.

I thought about a pirate theme or a more general nautical theme (he's big into pirates just now and I could chuck in a couple of Octonauts things) but i'm not sure. All ideas welcome!

Use stickarounds to decorate?

BikeRunSki · 22/04/2012 21:43

Plain walls, Octonauts bed linen and posters?

DeeLinquent · 22/04/2012 21:44

I was going to suggest pirates or how about space? Star print bedding, rocket and planet artwork with some glow in the dark spots on the roof for stars.
My Ds just turned 5 and this is the
2 he is stuck between he is driving me mad Grin

Going through exactly the same with my DS who is also 4. We're moving house in a few weeks and we wanted to get his room 'just right' for him and wanted a theme too.

After asking him of his opinion he wanted the following:-

Batman
Superman
Spiderman
Ben10

Anything 'superhero' related.

We've gone Ben10 and i've just ordered duvet sets, lamp and shade, beanbag, bin and concertina bin. Gone with plain curtains but one wall is going to have an 8ft x 10ft mural!

I am praying he's going to like it.........

Thanks everyone. Some of those decals are fab randommess!

Good luck with the Ben10 theme! We're at the other side of house moving - hoping to put the house on the market in the next year so I want to avoid anything too 'character' (for now, anyway).

Plain walls and curtains, and then theme it with bed linen and accessories - easier to change that way.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2012 22:31

I'm a bit confused - you are worried he will grow out of it, yet you say you are going to put the house on the market?? Confused

I'd paint the walls blue, buy some stick on Octonauts, a couple of the posters out of the magazines in cheap frames, some bedding, lightshade - they're all cheap enough to replace when he grows out of them in a couple of years.

something like this on one wall?

TheScottishPlayer · 22/04/2012 22:42

Ha, yes I can see that would be confusing. Grin I hope we'll be able to put the house on the market next year, but it's all a bit up in the air. If we were def going to move soon I'd just keep him in his current bedroom.

Because we may move though, I'd like to decorate it nicely (so it looks good for potential buyers) and have accessories that we can take with us. We could in theory be here for 2-3 years by which time I'm pretty sure he'll have grown out of Octonauts.

DS is also 4 & is having a new bedroom - a red white & blue theme room. White wall paper with red & blue footballs (feature wall), red curtains & red bedside light & ceiling light. He supports Chelsea & LFC so its safe for him!

TheScottishPlayer · 25/04/2012 13:16

EverybodysSleepyEyed - that's lovely wallpaper, but sadly my lack of wallpapering skills wouldn't do it justice.

Yankeecandlequeen - I think I've pretty much decided on a red/blue/white type theme, though as we have a lot of white furniture I'll go with a pale blue colour on the walls. It should look quite pulled together if and when we put the house on the market and easy to add in some pirate bedding/accessories and maybe a few octonauts things.

Thanks all for thoughts and suggestions.

DEfinitely add any theme via accessories rather than the decor as that makes it easy to change.

I painted DS1's bedroom when he was 4 and I've just changed the accessories completely, added a double bed and it looks fab now he's 13!
