staining a wooden worktop

I have an ikea wood worktop, was in the house when we bought it 4 years ago. I really want it to be a bit darker than it is. Does anyone know how I can do this? can I use a wood stain or is there something like a coloured oil to treat with?
this is it

Lots of info here stumbled across it today looking at ikea kitchen fix ups!

Have you tried danish oil. It will make it darker espeically if you put a few coats on. It wears off after a while and really should redo it every 6 months for best protection. I just did mine this weekend. I got a mini roller and rolled it on.

Thanks both of you, interesting link jamais, that is exactly the colour I want.
icapture - which brand of danish oil did you use?

I have just used wilkinson's danish oil here. It was quite a lot cheaper then other brands. You might need a few coats to get a dark colour.

this is suitable for worktops and comes in mid and dark oak.

We tried to stain ours.

DH had to sand it off again the next night.

We just oil them now.
