Panting furniture - please advise!

I have an old, probably yew, veneered desk. I sanded it and have now given it two coats of dulux primer/undercoat and am dismayed to see yellow stains coming through! The primer is a water based one.

So, do I try a couple of coats of oil based white stain wood before my colour of choice (a Crown satin wood). Or, do I need to buy a shellac primer at huge (further) expense?

The aim to have a cream desk for my bedroom, not distressed in shabby chic style, just beautifully painted!

I have used this primer, it's expensive but brilliant www.zinsseruk.com/shop/Product.aspx?cId=130&pgId=354

Thanks, I have ordered the Zinsser primer and will keep everything crossed. Another sanding today while waiting for it to arrive tomorrow...

May I ask another?

I have been advised to use a roller to get an even finish but using proper gloss rollers left a really obvious uneven bubbling, dimply effect. Am I doing something wrong that is easy to correct or should I stick to brushes?

Roller: roll the paint on to spread, then while it's still wet (so a bit at a time, with a clean 2 inch brush, lightly "lay off" the paint in the direction of the grain
this gives a lovely smooth finish

This was my new skill of the year thanks to Youtube.
