Does insulation under a wood floor make much difference?

Hi

We are replacing our wood floor and wondered if insulation would make much difference in keeping out the cold from the basement? We live in a raised ground floor flat, which is always cold without the heating on. Underfloor heating is too expensive an option right now but we are willing to consider cheaper options.

TIA

Heck yes, do it! Seriously, it makes so much difference. WIsh I'd done it sooner in my old flat - I also had a basement underneath and I can't even begin to describe the difference!! My DH (a builder) nearly died when he saw my old place - he couldn't believe that I'd not done it before.

Excellent! Thanks so much. Do you remember which insulation you got? One option is to put rhat fluffy stuff below the floorboards. Another option is foam.

It made a huge difference here when we put insulation under the floorboards. We used that hard foam stuff with a silver cover {technical terms}.

My DH reckons the best and easiest way with a basement underneath is to put rockwool insulation to fit inbetween the joists and then hold it in place by staple-gunning chicken wire underneath the joists to hold it all up. Sounds very DIY but he assures me it would be the most effective way when you've got the basement under there.

We've got no basement at our present house and we used the same as rhubarb mentioned and this other blue one that I think was extruded polystyrene.

It makes a huge difference in my opinion!
