We are planning a knockhrough our galley kitchen into our dining room and extend out the back.

Architect and structural engineer gave us a choice of a pole half way across the back of the house or a low rsj beam which will drop down from ceiling by a foot cutting out light.

Wwyd ?

I would opt for the rsj and compensate for the loss of natural light with some clever lighting. Poles make the space very awkward and tend to make a space look a bit cheap and 80s.

Yes go with the rsj.

Thanks for your comments.

Im looking into getting the rsj hidden at the moment but it seems to be very costly and will take more time to do. There will be an rsj anyway or 2 I think if they do the pole. It was the architect who recommended the pole with more light option which is why Im considering it. He said its going to be at the end of an island and will be fairly small.

Cheap and 80s is not what Im after at all! arrgh, Im going to have to think about this in more depth.
