How quickly am I likely to get new carpet and have it fitted?

My parents are coming for a week and kindly want to help with decorating. Finances have been totally up in the air and plans have kept changing (from new kitchen till I lost my job to just painting the children's rooms). Now we think we can afford stair and landing carpet and possibly the children's rooms.

Do carpet places usually have stock in or will I have to order? And where's the best place to find a fitter, as I gather the shops' own ones are pricey. Thanks.

Try an independent carpet shop not one of the big chain warehouses - they worked out way cheaper and the fitter came out to measure first so there was no waste.

The carpet shop we used had several 'stock' carpets, which were all fairly neutral and kept in stock all the time.

If you choose a stock carpet I think you have a reasonable chance of getting it fitted within a week.

We went to a local discount carpet warehouse on Sunday, ordered a 26ft neutral coloured lounge carpet and wood flooring for the hall, fitting was £100 all in, and it's being done today. Yippee!

just out of interest how much are carpets? I would love a new carpet in the lounge, on the stairs and landing and in our bedroom but never even looked as I assume cripplingly expensive.

My double lounge is 24ft by 12ft and it was £425 fitted for this sort of carpet inc. underlay.
