Where can I find a quality chest of drawers!

Am sure this one has been done to death - but where, oh where can I find a decent quality chest of drawers for my 4 year old son's room? ONe that will stand the test of time and looks ok and won't fall apart? Have just had a delivery from Aspace (thought I was pushing the boat out here, price-wise) - and the quality is so poor (plus 50% of the delivery is incorrect) that it is going back and I am getting a refund. I can't believe they charge so much given the poor quality.

Has anyone any recommendations they could make? Also need a low bookcase. Thanks in advance!

I have this in our daughter's room. I find Bentley makes good quality at a reasonable price. Have a look round their range. It's not childrens furniture, per se, so should grow with them as they get older. My other daughter has the Atlantis dark furniture. They are easy to open, have jams (if that's the word) to stop drawers being pulled out onto little feet and seem to stand climbing, banging, etc.

Also, the Hemnes range at Ikea is surprisingly robust.

We have this range in our room but it's pretty much solid oak and I think it's too heavy for a kid to open. There are no drawer runners and I wouldn't want the (heavy) drawers to drop on feet if pulled too enthusiastically.

Try auction houses/junk lower priced antique shops - victorian drawers are pretty reasonable, and are absolutely solid.

Thanks, guys - yes, jeee am considering that option too - may be the way forward!

our white company childrens wardbrobes have been excellent

or you may get lucky in an emmaus or old furniture shop - we have one or two brown wood items that look great and are well made - depends on the style of your home if that works or not. Our wardbrobe was £80 and is gorgeous - cheaper than ikea and much better made.

ebay antiques

I have just bought a victorian mahogany chest of drawers for £240 from our local auction room for ds's room. They had loads of them ranging in guide price from £60 to about £500. They were all super solid and in great condition and the one i've chosen is relatively plain and looks like it will withstand some bumps and knocks. In an otherwise light coloured room I think it's going to look good - BIL picking it up for me this evening!

Used furniture store. I bought one probably from 1940's. Very solidly constructed, fancy details like inlaid wood design. It cost about $100. It has deep roomy drawers.

For my remodeled closet, I bought a mid century low dresser so lots of drawers there.

I can't stand cheaply built furniture. My DIL bought a French
Provincial set for $250. Full bed, dresser, chest, and nightstand. Later she found a matching desk. We painted it glossy fresh white. This is for a three year old. Her room is pink, green and white. Very cute.

I second ebay, fab vintage/period furniture, solid wood at near Ikea prices AND you won't have to build it yourself!

Definitely Ebay, auction houses, charity furniture shops or anywhere selling furniture from before the 1980s when MDF came in and furniture became a disposable item. You can always paint it to match the room.

DD has a brilliant 1930s limed oak children's wardrobe (ebay, £80) and a limed oak cupboard/bureau (with fold-down desk surface) also ebay, for about £75. Both extremely solidly built, and when she outgrows them I can probably sell them on for a similar amount to what I paid.

Oka is really good quality if you want new. But for around the same price you could buy a lovely antique chest of drawers.
