Paint pad or roller?

About to embark on some decorating, having not done any for a good few years (had the luxury of being able to afford to get a decorator in in the last house, but no longer can afford to!). I think I remember using paint pads last time, as they splatter less than a roller, but have things moved on in the decorating world? What is the most efficient method giving the best finish?

Any advice gratefully received!

I'd always used rollers but last time we decorated we used a paint pad and it was brilliant.

I think it depends on the surface you are painting - we were painting plastered walls which were a bit uneven.

pads are quicker

I much prefer paint pads.
