Fake grass!!!

Thinking of looking into that face grass for the back garden!
Has been recommended by a friend... But all I want to do is scream 'nooo... wrong!!!!'
Has it come on since the vile stuff that my Gran used to have in her conservatory???
Is it a viable grass replacement?

Is there a reason you can't have real grass? My neighbour has the fake stuff. It's better than it used to be buys still not great.

We have a chunk of it under the swing where the real stuff never gets a chance to grow. It blends in remarkably well. Not sure about a whole lawn of it though.

I saw this in a magazine recently, deck boards with fake grass inserts from B&Q, that I surprised myself by likingquite a lot! Not sure you could do a whole garden, but great for a decking alternative or a play area.

Thanks Crocodilio... really like it. Thanks for the advice everyone...x

I need some for under the swing too - anyone reccommend someone for offcuts?

LaurieFairyCake · 14/03/2012 17:21

I looked at it in Homebase - looks pretty real to me. And not the killer environmentally I would have thought.

Sure it's not as good for above ground insects and the processing of the product isn't likely to be good for the environment but it is much better than paving over everything and causing the water problems and drought we all have.

I really want this fake grass! but problem is its quite expensive.. wondering if the decking one will be any cheaper (had never seen that one before so thanks to croc) it seems to be the installation that normally costs a lot? I've seen the fake grass in children's centres and it looked great and wont get muddy when it rains (thats what i dislike about the real stuff..)

My friend has a fake grass garden, and it looks nice but I noticed last summer that it got quite warm in the direct sunlight. Not sure if this would happen with any fake grass or only certain types, but on a very hot day it was slightly uncomfortable to stand on for any length of time in bare feet. I guess this wouldn't be an issue for the vast majority of the time, but on a really warm day it was just not as inviting as a nice cool grass lawn.

xmyboys · 15/03/2012 08:44

Interesting point chilli! Although for the four days of summer it's probably not a problem Grin
I want some for back of a new property we ate hoping to buy.

Beanbagz · 15/03/2012 09:26

You can get loads of fake grass offcuts on Ebay. Apparently a lot if left over from commercial projects (like show houses). DH is keen to have a large patch of it in the back garden but the DCs are not convinced. They thought it'd be too hard when they fell over.

Vickles · 15/03/2012 18:38

I've just bought a 99p sample from these people...

Thanks for all your inputs! x

It turns an unattractive bluish colour after a few years.

AuntLucyInPeru · 15/03/2012 19:21

There was some bloody amazing fake grass on a big stand at the Chelsea flower show last year. Even when I stood on it barefoot it was hard to tell. Cost about a grand for 10sqm though, so should be good for that price!

AuntLucyInPeru · 15/03/2012 19:23

We have a cheaper bit covering half of our paved mini London townhouse garden. Use it where the kids have their slide and climbing frame. You have to give it a stiff brushing every month to get the dirt off - very disconcerting to go out to brush the grass!
