Council building substation next to our house

Help !! Just found out the council are planning to build a new substation about 5 feet from our house (& my daughters bedroom). They say it doesn't need planning as permitted development. Anyone any ideas as to how we can stop this ? Have contacted Councillors, MP and going to go to press tomorrow but is there anything legal we can do ? Feeling v depressed.

Bumping for you

why is a council building a substation? Why isn't the Electricity Distribution Network Operator building it?

kilmuir · 28/02/2012 18:41

Are you sure its the council

Sorry, didn't phrase that well - was but upset. The council are letting it be built on school grounds next to our house. Have managed to get it moved 15m today but hoping to have it moved a lot further.

do you have some reason to suppose that substations are harmful? Wherever you live, there is likely to be one within half a mile or so. If it isn't next to your house, it will be next to someone elses. Presumably you have electricity and cables inside your house, and inside DD's room?

It would be 5 feet from my daughter's bed so not really keen to take the risk. Plus they make a humming noise. We are the last house in the road and then there is a 500m country lane with loads of space either side so they have no excuse to stick it next to us. Have found out its against government guidelines and also no tech reason it needs to go there. Legal action on its way.

They don't make a humming noise. We live next door to one and don't even remember its there half the time. It really isn't an issue, it is literally 6 foot from our house and we don't hear it at all. When we first moved I thought we might hear it but it doesn't make any noise. But if there's more room to put it somewhere else can't see why they can't move their proposed site.

Also in my area there is a substation on every road so one at least every 0.3 miles (short roads). Our houses all use electricity and have electricity running through constantly for various things so can't see what harm it can do.

I'm sure it's fine but I'd rather it was a little further away - there is loads of space. Council agree with us fortunately and it's being moved. Been bit of a fight but now won't have to look out of dining room at huge plastic box. Thanks for all your advice.
