can anyone recommend a dark red shiny type of wood suitable for a hall and living room?

Remember all woods go darker as they age. We had a solid cherry wood floor in our last house and it was brilliant. Because it's a hardwood I never noticed any dents in the floors even after 5 years. The beauty of solid wood is that if the floor does become worn, you can sand down and re-varnish.
