Brecon Beacons or Herefordshire

Hi everyone. I'm currently applying for a job many hundreds of miles away from where I live. The job is in South Wales in the Brecon Beacons national park. I am considering options in case I was offered the job. I'm not at all sure about moving to Wales. As the place of work is quite close to the border, WWYD? Move into Wales or stay on the English side of the border? Pros and cons? Are houses much more expensive in Herefordshire than the Welsh side? So confused!

Congratulations on the job offer!!

Did you have a preference to which side of the border from your research?
What's your rough budget and postcode area of work (CF, NP ect ) and might be able to think of something for you.

Oh gosh, we're still really not sure. We stayed in the Eppynt area when we went down for interview and were very taken with it, but have real concerns about the school upheavals going on in the area. In some ways I'd be more comfortable on the English side of the border but we're pretty limited then before the commute becomes too far.

Should have been clear that we'll be looking to rent at first while I find my feet. Probably not too far from work either so I don't have a sizeable commute to worry about on top of everything else. Postcode of work is LD. Budget for renting no more than around £600 a month.

For buying, eventually, around £180k, possibly up to around £220k if it's a forever house.

Welsh Side:
Gilwern
the next door house at Gilwern
Builth, 4 bed detached

Brecon, Talgarth, Crickhowell and Talybont on Usk are all stunning locations but price tags match this.
Will be back later with some more suggestions...

PS Congrats on the job!
PPS Your rental budget should get you something decent!

Thanks! And thanks for your suggestions. We're definitely looking to rent at first which could be quite a challenge, so I understand, as we might not get anything more than two weeks in advance! With school etc. to sort out it sounds like a nightmare! Wish us luck!

Sorry for delay but am back!

English side:
Leominster detached
Leominster again new build detached
Ross on Wye semi
Hereford detached cottage needs work
Coleford, Forest of Dean, 4 bed detached cottage
detached, Forest of Dean again
quirky 4 bed detached cottage, Forest of Dean

Note the Forest of Dean is about an hour or so from Brecon, about 20 min from Monmouth and 30-40 min from Gloucester, and although lovely its relative remoteness is reflected in the house prices.

Back to the Welsh side:
Brecon outskirts - detached but needs work
gorgeous cottage at Bwlch, under budget, but only 2 beds
building plot, Llangorse with pp for 4 bed house
Crickhowell 3 bed detached
quirky cottage Hay on Wye

With the exception of the Forest of Dean, mainly seems to be new build or modern properties in your price bracket, whichever side of the border....
