Where would you live in York?

We're moving to York in the summer and were wondering which are the desirable places to live with good amenities and schools etc? We've seen these houses on rightmove that we like but not sure what the areas/local schools are like. Some local advise would be great!

Personally, I would look at Heworth, the Mount, parts of Holgate and Fulford depending on budget.

Houses look lovely, but be careful with the East Parade ones, as there is a park opposite that sadly is usually frequented by homeless alcoholics.

Not that I have anything against homeless alcoholics, but...they can be a bit problematic.

Heworth and Tang Hall have quite a thin dividing line. Was at university here and supposedly house in 2nd year was in Heworth. Was definitely Tang Hall which isn't as nice :)

I live in a village a few miles to the East of York. Is nice here although sometimes would be nice to live more in the middle of York. I do cycle into York though which is good for the thighs.

Wigginton Road quite a busy road, and any driving around York is a pain.

Bootham is v nice.

Agree that East Parade not great - also fairly busy road (quite a few cars although generally going slowly). Looked at Heworth Primary School which seemed good although quite small and no outside space to speak of.

I've given my thoughts on your other thread. Never heard of any problems with the East Parade park though.

I'd recommend Bishopthorpe Road area. It's within walking distance of the city centre, has a lovely parade of local shops, good primary schools, the river, a lovely park and the racecourse all within a 10 minute walk. It has a good community feel too and some gorgeous period houses. Hope that helps, I am very biased though :)

I agree Bishopthorpe Rd is lovely but that whole side of York is heading or a major crunch on secondary school places.

That Bishopthorpe Road house is very nice, will look into that area. What is the knaivesmire / southbank like?

It's all the same area really. Knavesmire is nearer the racecourse. Proper South Bank houses are quite small - lots of little terrace streets. The bigger stuff is mostly further away from the river. Knavesmire Primary has traditionally been very popular but I think may be having a little wobble atm from things I've heard. They were resoundingly crap with my friend's son who has SEN.

Both this and this are on Bishopthorpe Road but are quite a bit more expensive than other areas!

Hi there,
I'm not sure what age your kids are, but if I was moving to York (I'm not because I already live here!) I'd be looking at Secondary Schools first and trying to move into a decent catchment. That would be either Fulford (in Fulford itself) or Manor (North side of the city near Poppleton). Personally, I think Fulford is a nicer area to live in and the school has a sixth form - unlike Manor. It's expensive, though. There are good primaries in both areas, too. HTH

Fulford's catchment area is a bit weird as it includes my village and at least one other to the east of York despite other secondary schools being nearer to us Hmm. DC only in Y3 and Y1 and not convinced we will still be in Fulford's catchment by then.

Heslington seems lovely but I don't really have a clue what I am talking about. Nice sandwich shop

My friend lives in dunnington. It's a lovely village on the outskirts. Good schools and amenities. Close to park and ride. Community feel.

Heslington is nice. Especially useful if you work at the University. And downhill into York itself although uphill on the way back of course.

Must stop posting on these threads so much and do my work....

I am utterly Envy.
I went to uni in York, lived in Heworth. We dream of living in York and I check rightmove once a week at least and I've lusted after all of those!
I loved Heworth. But it was err, hmm, 14 years ago Sad.
Not much help I know but Heworth would be my first choice. Heworth c of e school was well thought of. But I do remember secondary places being a bit of a bun fight.

The main Tadcaster Road YO23 and into town towards the Mount is great if you want to be central, access to the race course great for dog walking, bike riding and kite flying with kids all year round :)
Bishopthorpe Village a great option too with good primary schools. We live in YO23 but DS at Bish school.

Secondary schools could be tricky as mentioned above as a lot of changes going on which I get the impression is ongoing, been living here 5 years and still not sure if we will need to move as DS gets older...!

Bishopthorpe rd - best place in York to live! Expensive but worth it, property seems to hold it's value.

The main change with secondary education is that manor no longer has a catchment as such since it went academy: so not really possible to move for a safe place there. Free school plans in holgate turned down (hurrah), but I don't think much else is changing.
If I won the lottery I'd live in heslington, but there's not really much there smaller than big double fronted loveliness, which I think is probably more than the houses youre looking at cost!
Agree that bishopthorpe road is very nice, good primaries and the secondary there is apparently looking up, with new head.
I often drive down east parade and I always think it looks really nice! I'll look out for drunken vagrants next time...
