We have just moved into our new house. It needs complete redecoration throughout having previously been tenanted and whilst looked after, is very tired. DH's parents have just very generously given us some money that means we can do some of the work straight away, but I am not very good at this type of thing.

I want to do the living room first, this is a big square room with a high ceilng and picture rail (the house is a 1930s semi), it needs a new fireplace, would like build in units in the alcoves either side of the fireplace, needs a carpet, curtains (no curtains) and redecorating. Where do I start...have no idea how to come up with a colour scheme or anything.

I quite like this wallpaper in gold-off-white

if I did this on one wall what colour would I paint the other walls, what kind of curtains would match....do I paint different colour above picture rail? We have a brown leather sofa which I would like eventually to replace and a chair covered in <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=laura+ashley+acantha+gold&hl=en&biw=1280&bih=822&tbm=isch&tbnid=-_S6azzMJIVY1M:&imgrefurl=mto.lauraashley.com/made-to-measure-curtains/fabric/12616/acantha-gold&docid=UP1ibacMh0ET3M&imgurl=mto.lauraashley.com/media/reskin/fabrics/large/3466791.jpg&w=1374&h=912&ei=VETvTv3uEtOHhQfL1oCgDg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=300&vpy=159&dur=16&hovh=183&hovw=276&tx=123&ty=117&sig=114526642686552434628&page=1&tbnh=130&tbnw=196&start=0&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this fabric would that be ok with the wallpaper but would I need plain curtains then?

As my name says I have no clue...can someone help me with some ideas...

How high up is the picture rail? You could put the wall paper below and paint the wall above with the paler of the two colours? I would go for plain curtains... are you going to have mirrors/ pictures up?

hi Haveno,
I think that the wallpaper is not particularly suitable for a feature wall and may look a bit odd.
Is it possible to use it on all walls as has been suggested above, using the paler colour above the picture rail.
Is it a square bay? Roman blinds look good in these.
A wooden floor in warm tones.
Matching mirror above the fire.
Don't forget that the built-ins the firep, ace and furniture will lessen the effect of the wallpaper.
Still very bland so pick a rug with another colour in it and import this colour to accessories, cushions etc
