Anyone bought any nice lights lately?

Am really struggling to pick lights. Cant decide if things are nice or naff.

I need:

Wall lights x 3 and a ceiling light for small living/tv room. Walls are pale grey, curtains also pale gray with duck egg pattern, one dark gray sofa.

Ceiling light for main living room. Colours are beige, cream and black.

2 hall lights.

Ceiling light for main bedroom. Very neutral colour scheme.

House is Edwardian. DH hates anything fussy.

Have to go and do some sorting and tidying now but will be back later and am hoping for lots of suggestions.

Oh - budget! It's stretchy and very elastic!

Have you tried John Lewis?

CiderwithBuda · 30/11/2011 11:34

I have. Just can't decide if what I like is nice or naff! I have no idea why ts is so hard! Electricians coming on Tuesday so would like to have picked some by then.

I think I have been looking for too long and looking for too many at the same time and my head is fried.

My first stops for lighting are:

  • Heals for modern styles (and then find same thing cheaper online Wink)
  • Jim Lawrence for more period/classic styles
  • Laura Ashley and John Lewis also worth a look

What are the ones you like? We can tell you if they are naff or not Grin

Minipie - where is a good place to look for something cheaper than the lights in Heals? They are lovely, but I think my DH might have a minor heart attack if I link him the Heals versions.

minipie · 30/11/2011 13:37

There are lots of online lighting stores for example Ocean Lighting - if you can work out the brand and name of the light you like in Heals, you can usually find it a reasonable amount cheaper at one of these sites. What sort of thing do you like?

The lighting market is evolving very quickly at the moment. We bought entirely new lighting 6 years ago, and knew the market inside out at that point, but that was before low energy bulbs became obligatory.

I really like the Flos KTribe lights eg KTribe F - the light is pretty and they go with everything.

I had forgotten about Jim Lawrence. Thanks.

Am on iPad and crap at links but will try later. Need to go clear living room for painter.

The lighting in John Lewis has gone from unbearably naff about three years ago (even the JL furnishing advisor agreed with us they weren't suitable) to really very nice now. Either they are buying in from the same suppliers as Heals and selling them for about £20 less, or they are ripping off the Heals' designs to an appalling extent.

We've used Tokyo wall lights, which are available in both Heals and JL, and they look very good in our 16th century house - much better than the wrought iron Jim Lawrence ones that the previous owner put up.

I love the Flos KTribe lights, though - want them for my new bedroom.

If you want to splash out, Selfridges has a good selection.

Thanks for suggestions.

GrendelsMum - we have the Tokyo lights in sitting area off kitchen. Got ours from Holloways of Ludlow.

Never thought of Selfridges.

Bonsoir - they are nice.

Leeks are good and often have the same range as Heals but cheaper Smile
