Sofa to match a leather armchair

I'm about to move house- and want to buy a new sofa.

The room isn't vast (think Victorian typical snug front room!). I have a beautiful leather armchair and would like a nice 3-seater sofa to go with it.

Do I just bite the bullet and fork out for the matching 3-seater, or can someone suggest a nice fabric sofa to go with it? I love plaid, but is this a bit old fashioned?

Ideas please!

I'd go for plaid rather than leather, which can be a bit overwhelming if there's lots of it in a small room. There are some gorgeous wool plaids around in lovely smoky heathery colours at the moment, and although it's fashionable I don't think it will date. Try sofa workshop, you can have many of their sofas covered in anything from their range and they're bound to have something.

I too would go for plaid.
A local independent upholsterer would cover a sofa in the fabric of your choice. They would have standard frames eg like those of Laura Ashley, that would suit the style and proportions of your chair, but at about 70% of the cost.
I am in Glasgow area.

Thanks- think I'm sold on plaid- just need to convince husband.

Being in the SE, it may not be so inexpensive to go to an independent upholsterer, but think I've found somewhere- sofas and stuff- based in tunbridge wells. It looks like they do covering as well as frames.
