IKEA kitchen? Anyone got one?

Hi guys,

Following on from our fire, we are hopefully soon going to be in the position of getting a new kitchen. I have been looking around. I like a lot of the unit options at Ikea, and, importantly, there is no 4-6week lead time (I want to be able to get it ASAP if we get the go ahead)

It does seem to be quite cheap, compared to some other places. I know nothing about "quality" of kitchen units etc. So! Do any of you have an IKEA kitchen, and how do you rate it? Do you know anyone who does? What is your general opinion on IKEA kitchens?

I do and i LOVE LOVE LOVE my Ikea kitchen it is gorgeous and it is hard wearing, clean and very good quality.
Its the 3rd kitchen ive had and it is by far the best.

DH fitted it, he is pretty good at that kind of thing so he didnt find it difficult.

I would highly recomend Ikea.

yes I have had 2 ikea kitchens and would definitely recommend - both abstrakt white high gloss with oak bench tops. I think they are great but you just have to be aware if you buy sinks/taps etc from somewhere else you might need to adjust things slightly (this is what we did). Easy to put together (I put all the carcasses for cupboards and drawers together myself). My DH friend who is a kitchen fitter says they are the best for the price.

One important point is that there is no gap behind the units for pipes etc, so sure where they go, but a work around has to be found.

Thank you both ! I have kinda set my heart on the abstrakt- was going for the white gloss, but have now been swayed by seeing the abstrakt grey gloss, which looks lovely and a wee bit different!

My builder-to-be had advised I go look at Magnet kitchens 9he has a trade account with them), but they didn't have the same variety of units as ikea, and their kitchens were twice the price! Was so hoping people would come back and tell me their Ikea kitchens were fab, so I could persuade DH.

I've got one and I think it's great for the price. I've got lots and lots of pull-out bits because it's affordable. Was tempted by the grey gloss myself, looks pretty stylish, I think. The bonus is, if you fancy changing the doors, you can. And if you want more units, you can just go and get some. Nothing in Magnet or Howdens made me think "Yes!"

Well, exactly, said! the Ikea ones just seem so funky and efficient, great use of space, easy to design. The upside of having your kitchen go on fire at 2am is that you get to get rid of that kitchen you never liked- actually getting quite excited at the prospect of my new kitchen now!! The Ikea stuff just seemed a bit too good to be true, price-wise, so I'm relieved to see that a good few of you have one and have been happy with it. DH will always bow to the collective wisdom of MN, so I'm pleased to have a few good responses

Good point, SierraMadrid- how did other people get round this? Was it difficult?

The units for sinks do come with some sort of back that accommodates the pipes. Otherwise, it was a new kitchen and rest of appliances were free-standing except ff

My parents' current kitchen is from Ikea - white, but not Abstrakt, possibly Ädel? It's not AS nice as the kitchen in the previous house, which was bespoke with real wood everything, but considering the price difference it's really good. My dad's immensely handy, so has managed to fit it really effectively - some of the bits are his bespoke woodword rather than bought units, for example. I don't remember him having any problems with it. It has lovely things like larder units that pull out, and soft-close drawers.

A friend of mine got an ikea kitchen and got it properly fitted. I was v impressed with the look and quality. We will be doing an ikea shop once we get into new house!

We just dropped the pipes down to the floor to go behind the legs of the carcasses i think it was quite an easy job for our fitter. Very exciting to get a new kitchen especially after a fire. I am just waiting on the flooring to be finished - currently have 70s lino with bit cut out showing lovely concrete bits. Hopefully done before christmas.

We've got one and love it. We bought the worktops elsewhere - better quality and cheaper, but that was because we needed a bit more depth to fit a waste pipe behind the cupboards. You must get the corner-pully-outy-cupboard. I love it. Do their designy thingy online, it's great to use.

Oh, and definitely get handles from elsewhere - IKEA range expensive and not very nice, but easy to find elsewhere.

Have had two in two different properties. Love it.
White abstract.
Time was issue in both so did buy oak bench top, just a pain to maintain so would get other benchtop next time.
Friend has grey and looks fab in her house!

I have one, in plain wood-think it's the Adel-had it for 4 years and it still looks brand new.
We paid (I think) £50 to get the designer guy to come to the house to do the design-it was refunded off the price of the kitchen-and thought it was worthwhile.
My dad has one too, he got the hi gloss in red and it's fantastic
We used Ikea's fitters, as they also did other building work for us (we were knocking dining room and kitchen together) and they did the whole thing in 5 days!!!
I got Ikea worktops too, as they were able to do some custom shaping without any hassle.
I'd totally recommend them

Love it. Was already in house when we arrived - no probs and looks good.

Love my Ikea kitchen. Got the red gloss one. Was the only kitchen that made me smile when I was looking. I would say pay to get them out to measure and plan. It only cost me £20 and as my kitchen had lots of odd sticking out bits of wall, it was easier and quicker to get it done by someone who knew what they were doing.
Sink unit was cut into a bit, as there was the mains water turn off tap in the corner which needed access.
Got my worktop elsewhere and all fitted by my joiner.
Also like the fact that with Ikea you know the price of everything before you start.
They also delivered exactly when they said they would

WE put in an Ikea kitchen six years ago and it still makes me smile. Really love the deep drawers and the pull out larders. We put 2 lots of wall cupboards on top of each other on the floor and created a whole wall of storage which is fab as we have so much junk.

seb, we thought they might have been, but they worked out about the same as it would have been if we'd sourced our own fitters. A huge bonus I thought was with them working with Ikea units all the time, they put them together in no time, and there was no issue with sorting out pipes etc, as I believe a lot of fitters can, because they're slightly different from the usual cabinets.
Really couldn't recommend them highly enough

We got one, luckily it was a 2nd utility room kitchen because it was a nightmare.
First they brought doors (high gloss red) that were all scored etc.
Sent these back and they came back out with a completely different kitchen altogether.
3rd time lucky but took too bloody long.
