Wooden table needs oiling

according to my mother, who pursed lips sagely.

What/ how do i do it? It;s colour has faded down the 'plank' in the middle.

it depends what wood it is, and whether it you want to use an oil based solution that stains slightly or not

It's a dark wood similar to mahogany, a complete stab in the dark at an educated guess... Can i just put oil into it or does it need a solution?

you can get teak oil easily.

polish off anything that hasn't soaked in after a few minutes, or it will go tacky.

A lot of dark hardwood furniture is made of rubberwood these days. It is dark, chunky, and always solid, never veneered.
