Do banks still offer preferential terms on mortgages to their employees?

I've just had an offer for a house I'm selling from someone working for one of the Big 4 banks who is getting his mortgage from another of the Big 4 banks. Back in time, banks offered preferential mortgage rates to their employees. Does this still happen or do bank employees now find they can get better rates elsewhere?

yes they do, dh works for a big 4 bank and we can get a mortage about 1-2% apr lower than a regular mortgage.

Thanks Heather! I can only presume that, as my solicitor suggested, the other bank is offering a rock bottom rate at the moment.
