Decorating motivation?

Any good tips to get me started?

Our house is in fairly good condition but just needs painting and generally sorting out (new curtains, pictures, etc.). I want a lovely house but just cannot get motivated to start and am starting to totally annoy myself!

Can anyone help?!

Hiya, I posted a similar thread to yours a few weeks ago. We bought a house and has been in for almost 3 months and the only room that is 'done' is my boys' sleep room, their play room is getting done in a week or two and I just went to Ikea to buy a whole lot of stuff yesterday plus B&Q for paint. Again, ours doesn't need major work (well we might have a wall knocked through but maybe in a couple of months), just redecorating and I find it so hard to motivate myself as the thought of having to do the whole house seems a big job!

I guess the only advice I can give you is to do it room by room so the job doesn't seem too big. I had a definite idea for how I want the boys' rooms to be so started with those... As I was doing those, I've been thinking about the guest bedroom and now finally have an idea of the style I want to do that in... And once the bedrooms are done, plus upstairs bathroom, I'll do the hall before the reception rooms downstairs (because that's the 'knock through' job to go...). And I think the garden will get sorted next year.

Also, I decided on wall colours first and then the room accessories became easier to 'pick' as I had the wall colour to match against...

Also, I went out and bought a couple of house design magazines to get ideas. The other website for great ideas is www.housetohome.co.uk/ house to home]]. They might inspire you! You have to take your time and don't rush into it. Good luck! :)

Me too...no motivation
I have all the paint,tools,everything....for 2 months!
I just keep making feeble excuse after feeble excuse.

I find the only way to motivate myself is to get rid of all the "temporary solutions" so that I really have to do something about it. So for example, if I need new curtains, I will take down the old ones/temporary sheet I've been using, so that I have no curtains - this will force me to do something about getting the new ones made... A bit extreme maybe but I really do have no discipline otherwise!

Room by room sounds like a good idea. I should probably try that. Trouble is, if I'm looking for a coffee table, I will then suddenly notice a nice bedside table ... and then I'm on a different room...

minipie I know what you mean... I went to Ikea to get toy storage for the boys' playroom and ended up with quite a few bits for the guest bedroom but I don't think that's a bad thing... And thanks to MN, I also have the guest bedroom colour pretty much sorted! The thing is you really have to get on with it. Otherwise, your house just gets piled up with things in boxes! :)
