How soon to start chasing solicitor?

3 and a half weeks ago we had our offer accepted on a property. We are in rented with a mortgage in place ready to go, vendors have vacated their property (elderly mothers house who has gone to nursing home). We instructed solicitors and surveyors straight away as did the vendors. Survey came back within 4 days.

Should be chasing the solicitor now as we've heard nothing for 2 weeks?

Short answer: you chase them constantly until you hold the keys to the new house in your hand.

Ring them today, get an update, agree what will happen next and when. If those dates pass, chase again.

Remember that you're paying them to do a service, so you are fully entitled to know exactly what's going on and be quite demanding towards timescales. I used to stay in touch with the solicitor every few days and always ask 'what is the next thing to happen, what are the critical things that still need to be done, what's holding it up, what can I do to make it go faster'.

I agree with ciske. Call them, find out what's going in and when then ask for a weekly call with progress update with details of what's going to happen next.

Sometimes you have to wait for searches to come back but they should let you know

Solicitors are all completely useless! None of these people seem to know their a**e from their elbow. You will need to constantly harass them & get the estate agent to do the same or nothing will get done. :(

Thanks everyone for your replies. I emailed them today and li and behold - she's on holiday!!! No estate agents involved so can't phone them. I'll try again in a couple of days

See? God they are useless! Took my lot over a month to find the memorandum of sale. The EA had sent it out to them several times!!

Keep ringing. Someone in the office should be covering her caseload while she is on holiday.
Ours were awful. They lost our signed mortgage deed at the eleventh hour as well

I would chase at least once a week. Too often and you might start to rack up your costs, but a quick phone call once a week will keep them remembering about you
