Help please - flooring for hall...

I have recently bought an 80's house which is full of dark wood fittings (not my choice but far too ££ to change!). I would have loved a dark wooden floor for my hall but getting the right shade to match all the other wood would be impossible plus also it would really darken the house as there is not much natural light in the hall way.

Light wood would surely look awful and am not keen on sizal type floor coverings. Anyone have any suggestions - needs to be relatively cheap!

TIA

What about pale floor tiles? It won't be wood so it won't clash with the other fittings, won't be carpet or sisal and should cope with high-traffic.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "fittings" (furniture, general woodwork or something different entirely?), but would it be possible to paint them? A satin/eggshell acrylic paint gives a lovely finish, rarely discolours (unlike some oil-based gloss), is hardwearing and relatively cheap, plus would mean you could have a dark wood floor without darkening the hall.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of tiles.

It's doors, stairs, units, cupboards etc that are all stained dark wood. I could probably paint them but shudder at the thought of it as it is all through the house and would take so long to do them all!!
