Would this be daft??

We have kitchen opening onto dinning/morning room - which is very dark. Kitchen is lighter due to massive window. I now quite fancy light oak units, easier to hide kids hand marks and more hard wearing i think. As the dinning/morning room bit is dark, to lighten it up would white/off white doors but the same style as the oak work? The colours would not be next to each other, but in an open plan layout. Only cupboards in 2 alcoves....

Or should i just get everything the same.....

We did our kitchen with blue and yellow doors (they were wood with panels of colour) and I loved it. I don't think all the cupboards need to look the same so long as it looks planned. Another alternative would be to go for a shaker style unit in your dining room.

oh gosh! just googled chalon ...... i'd kill for a kitchen like that!!!

Not the greatest illustration of what I mean but here they have one run of cupboards in one paint colour and an island unit in another finish, but same style of units so it works. You see the kind of look you describe in interiors mags a lot and I really like it.

like this? It needs a lot of thought to look good it definitely isn't something to do without planning it out in detail first and having a definite balanced design otherwise it could look a mismatch

Well yes, clearly I don't actually have a chalon kitchen (or a smallbone one for that matter) but have tried to replicate the look with B&Q shaker doors, an antique half pine/half painted kitchen table and a dresser my husband built with a handy alcove, a painted chest of drawers and some MDF! It looks good, honestly!

The idea is similar, but the oak would be in the kitchen area which is a rectangle shape opening onto much bigger square morning room. So the units would be nowhere near each other...

It will work. I have seen very similar things in interiors mags, unfortunately cannot linkie to any relevant pictures but I think it would look lovely.
