Midi cabin bed/high sleeper or single bed with overbed storage

We're moving my son into our small third bedroom so he can have a room of his own - as it's quite small it needs a bed with some sort of storage - but am having trouble on deciding between a midi cabin bed with cupboad/desk/shelves underneath or a single bed/possibly with extra trundle bed with overbed storage- ie shelves.

Basically which would last the longest - he's 7now - so ideally would like it to last for a good few years.

Any opinions welcome!!

Will you want him to do homework in his room? If so then the option which allows a desk is probably a good idea.

Are the things he needs to store suitable to just go on shelves? And what about the things he's likely to have in the next few years? Where will his clothes go? Will you want to hang things like school shirts/ blazer once he's at secondary school?

Can the high sleeper be converted into an ordinary single bed in the future? That would give you the flexibility to change if he decides he's too old for a raised bed.

Dd has a metal hi-sleeper with a desk and futon chair underneath (she is 9 and has had the bed since she was 6). There is no extra storage but she has loved the bed. The desk is great for doing homework, drawing etc and the futon chair has been well used by friends staying over and by her when she wants a change. She has a wardrobe she uses for clothes etc.

I must admit we are now trying to sell it as we have low ceilings and she keeps bumping her head-doesn't help when she trys to do somersaults on it :)

They come up on freecycle/gumtree/ebay quite a lot, so have a look around before shelling out. Some of the designs are quite childish, so watch out for that too, as you don't want him to get fed up with it by the time he's 12. My 16yo has a cabin bed with big cupboards and drawers underneath which is fab, but it's a very solid and grown-up design (hand-made by some artisany furniture co, we bought it second-hand on ebay).

If you have an awkward space it may work out cheaper to get someone to build a bed and cupboards/shelves to fit the space -- some of the cheaper eg Argos beds are very flimsy for the price.

We got the dcs midsleepers and wish we hadn't. They are great for storing some toys etc but all too quickly they become babyish and something associated with primary school. I wish we'd spent money on a good single with a truckle for guests.
