Where do people move to when they need more space and can't afford houses in Hackney? How do you adjust??

I hear people people move south down the East London line, Forest Hill, Brockley, Honour Oak for example.

I had to move south of the river to Catford because i couldn't afford to buy in Hackney. Most of my friends moved further east to places like Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone, but that was back in the 90's so trend may have changed. I'm now in very suburban (Bromley) Hayes, and loving it!

Thanks for replies, vonnyh how did you find Catford, it seems quite affordable?
Was it a shock to move to suburbia or a relief?

Forest Hill, Brockley and Honour Oak seem quite nice, but just seem quite far out (geographically speaking) from Central London. I wondered if you feel more disconnected from London or maybe it's much nicer....and calmer....

I liked Catford. my house was nearer to Hither Green station than Catford. My commute to work was easy as there are so many trains to London Bridge. Having said that. I love where I live now, it does feel calmer, and i feel like I'm more part of a community here. That may be due to me having DC's now. I still go back to Hackney to visit friend, but I'm always gald to come home to "dreaded" suburbia!
