use of space

My house has a large bedroom, really ridiculously big - it has room for two king sized beds in it.

Therefore I have my bed and then a massive empty space - over half of the room. I have no idea what to usefully do with it. Any ideas?

If I had the money I would get the internal walls moved so we don't have a box room and DC#3 has a bigger bedroom but that is not an option.

It just seems such a waste of space. I've been there two years now and I thought an idea would have presented itself but none as yet.

Ours was the same, so we put in an ensuite but still have loads of space - super kingsize bed, triple wardrobe, double wardrobe, chest of drawers, huge linen trunk at end of bed, oak console table - just added a sofa & armchair and it looks quite nice now! Totally superfluous of course but they fill the space well.

If I'd built the extension I would've made it into 2 bedrooms with shared bathroom...

Stud wall and make it two?

vividgingerchilli · 27/07/2011 18:48

Hmm, the stud wall idea appeals but it would mean creating either a room with no window or splitting the window in two because doing it any other way would create a room with no door!

Depends how the room is laid out/landing etc.

Add ensuite, rent it out as a studio room to someone and get some cash?

Walk in wardrobe, wafty curtains and a chaise longue Smile

How about a stud wall and a doorway from DC3's room? If you can't afford to knock the wall down, a doorway would be cheaper.

vividgingerchilli · 27/07/2011 20:39

Hmmm, I suppose we could add a doorway from DC3's room and have a stud wall which went across from the middle of the window and created one l-shaped room and another room which would be DCs room and half of the current room...not sure what that would do for market appeal when we came to sell though.
We're not thinking of selling though, this is our (to use a hated expression) our "forever home"
I sometimes wonder about giving DC3 the big bedroom and me having the box room....not keen on that but.....

from the landing you can go right into DC3's room or straight on into the large room, left is DC1 and DC2's rooms and the bathroom. There is no space to have another door off the landing.

So could the existing box room be a dressing or storage room with a door to the bed area (or vice versa)?
