moving a distance away - do the removals people still do it all in one day?

We're moving about 3.5hrs drive away. How does it work, does anyone know?

Last time we moved 3 minutes down the road, so they came and packed one day, and then the next day loaded the van, drove round the corner, and unloaded. They still weren't finished till 7:30pm.

I can't see how this will work with a long drive in the middle!

My parents did a similar move many years ago - loaded up one day and delivered to new house first thing the next.

We moved 100 miles so they stored our stuff overnight and delivered it 8am the following morning. It was winter so they would have been moving us in in the dark.

Was strange sleeping on a blow up bed for the night but also great as I painted DS1's room before they delivered the furniture into it

We moved from Scotland to England, but had already moved the bare essentials with us as dh's company were paying for us to go into rented. When our furniture came, the packers (we used Pickfords) packed it all up one day, drove down to England and kipped in their cab in the Pickfords depot here and then came with the van and unload the next day at the new house. (Dh's parents locked up the house at the Scottish end).

We moved from London to here (Herefordshire) and as it was just the two of us was arranged to be done in one day. However the extremely dopey removal company went to Hertfordshire so we had to sleep on bare carpet with sleeping bags lent to us by new next door neighbours and wait until the idiots found us. They then tried to sting us for the extra money as they'd charged for Hertfordshire, even though the paperwork all had the right address on, and the overnight stay. Needless to say they didn't get it, and we managed to extract compensation from them!

Our next move was only about 10 miles, but involved a monster lorry, a small lorry and 3 days in total - packing/loading 2 days, and actual move and unload 1 day. In our defence there are 5 of us, plus assorted animals - even so it was a long haul!

We moved over 2 days.

The removal firm we hired came form the town we were moving to. That was important because it meant they could put all our stuff in the truck, drive to the town we were moving to and put the truck in their secure warehouse overnight. The removal men also did not need to sleep in the truck or in a hotel overnight so saving us costs. Then they arrived at our new house bright and early next morning having driven only 15 minutes from their warehouse and all unloaded by lunchtime.

Snort at going to Herts instead of Herefordshire!

I quite like the idea of starting the unloading first thing in the morning, and we've all got camping mats & sleeping bags.

Will have to talk to the removals firms and see what they can do.

It's amazing how many people get the two mixed up! Depending on how much stuff you are moving I think 2 days is your minimum, unloading is much quicker for them than loading.

We are doing a similar thing. Our removal comapany are coming to pack on the first day, then back the second day to load up the lorry and do the long drive to where we are moving to. They will stay in the area overnight and then unload first thing the next morning.

Suits us, as it gives us time to get to the house and sort out things succh as cleaning (if it needs it) and fixing up curtain poles etc (as they are taking all of them).

We are staying in a premier inn the night before which dd is looking forward to. All part of the adventure to her.

All the removal companies we spoke to siad they would do the same due to the distance.
