moving - top tips

anyone? we are moving in two weeks from a three bed house. i can not be arsed to pack! please inspire me. don't make me post in AIBU!!

One box with loo roll, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and flannels, tea bags, coffee, milk, kettle, mugs, plates, knives, forks and spoons. And a bag of clothes for the next day.

Get the beds up first, make sure quilts and pillows are easily findable. Sod everything else until tomorrow

As for the boxes, unpack them all within the first two weeks. If you havent unpacked them by then, you probably never will.

i'm making it worse for myself by going to peppa pig world for 3 days next week and then away for a week again the day after we move in. and dh is working all the week we move....that may be a good thing. good advice, thanks follyfoot. now, what do i do with the children!

I move every two years currently as hubby is crown employee. I know that it could potentially be expensive but when we do our last move I am going to get in the packers and removals. No chance I am doing it all myself. Plus I hate the packing but don't mind the unpacking.

Hire a small lock up now and every day take a few boxes of things to it until you only have the bare essentials left. Then on moving day it is much less hassle and you can collect the things from the lock up gradually once moved in. I always do this and find moving not stressful at all! Put all book art mirrors lamps non essential clothes/bedding/kitchen stuff. Keep out basic crockery and pans and clothes and it is painless x

What noddy said. We just moved and spent several weeks filling dhs dads garage with stuff. We had our van loaded by 12 (other end was a different story!!) it made life much easier, though I confess I thought dp was odd for suggesting it :)

yes, kind of taking that approach, though unfortunately we're moving from staines up to the midlands, so not all that convenient, but am roping anyone and everyone into taking one trip up the motorway for me with a bootful of non essential stuff. makes you realise how much stuff you just don't need, doesn't it.

just got a quote for a van plus team for the day - £1k....does that seem a lot? it does to me. we moved here 3 years ago and paid £400 for two guys and a van.

Get rid of as much junk as you can before packing (charity shop / Ebay / bin), then there'll be less crap to unpack at the other end.

Start packing NOW. It's not as bad if you pack up a few boxes each night.

Make sure you label what's in each box (eg 'bedding', 'shoes' etc, otherwise you'll never find anything).

Farm the kids out to a friend or relative on the day of the move if possible.

Also label which room you want the boxes to go in at the other end.

Pay for packers and movers. Only cost me an extra £150 for them to pack. They did it in 6 hours! And an additional £30 to clear our massively cluttered attic. I was 37 weeks pregnant when we moved so no way could we have managed otherwise. I had enough to do with unpacking, cleaning etc.

Considering last time we moved I crashed the van costing us £350 in excess payments and wiping out any savings we made in DIY removals I would now always pay.

Don't go with a national though, we found them a lot more expensive than a local firm that seemed less slick on the surface but were fantastic.

Just moved house, our removal company, sheffield based, were excellent. Made it so very easy. I paid an additional £150.00 to get them to pack up the entire house, I did absolutely nothing. An absolute bargain, I'd recommend to anyone. It was worth every penny. Good luck.
